Rosalyn Brown, who heads the university's student affairs shop, says the board is an integral part of ensuring that all student voices are heard. "Sometimes students feel that their voices may not be heard when they go before [the student government association]," Brown says, adding that the the board counters that by bringing all groups together in an effort to construct a sense of community among the student organizations.
And this year there will be many groups. Brown, who chaired the board's first meeting, told those in attendance that 45 clubs and organizations were recognized by the university this semester, including several newcomers like the art club Young Urban Artists, the Future Teachers Organization and Helping to Educate Regarding Orientation (H.E.R.O.), an alliance of lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgendered and straight students.
Brown also introduced Yvonne Patterson, a psychologist in the CSU counseling center who specializes in group dynamics, as the board's administrative chairperson. Patterson says she is very optimistic about the board's future and anticipates that the organization will do exciting things for the student body.
Brown also addressed financial matters at the meeting. This year, she noted, student groups are slated to receive up to $1,000 from the university to cover operating costs.
